Back Up Alert Devices are not intended to replace good driver habits and should be used only as a tool to aid the person backing up. The Manufacturer and their distributors accept no responsibility for damages that may be incurred while backing up.

*Detecting range from 12 feet down to 12 inches.

The Back-Up Pal micro series Vehicle Reversing Aids with VDI are discriminating, collision warning/obstacle detection systems capable of warning a driver if there are obstacles or pedestrians in a defined area behind a rearward moving vehicle. The system uses patented ultrasonic echolocation technology to alert the driver of impending collisions when a vehicle is engaged in reverse.

The System is comprised of (2), (3) or (4) miniature acoustic transmit/receive detectors, a speaker, and a main unit housing an 8-bit microprocessor together with our VDI (voice distance indicator) module. Our detectors are sealed within a specialized rubber compound capable of protecting the detector from the elements and temperature extremes. The detectors are adapted for mounting on the rear bumper or underneath the bumper of most types of vehicles. The voice alarm speaker easily mounts in any location in the driver's compartment.

The power source of the device is the backup light electrical circuit of the vehicle. The detectors transmit a 33.5 kHz motion sensing frequency within a defined field behind the vehicle with range setting accuracy of +/- 2 inches.  Six audio and voice definitions are preset at the time of manufacture.

As the operator places the vehicle in reverse, a short “beep” indicating that the unit is in working order. Distinct audio and voice alarm triggers when either the vehicle or obstacle enters into the detection zones. Unlike other obstacle detection systems, the Back-Up Pal Vehicle Reversing Aid performs in all weather and light conditions, eliminates visual distraction and driver complacency, is maintenance free, costs less than an average insurance deductible and installs in less than 30 minutes.

The system was designed as a driver aid to help compensate for driver error and is not intended to replace established safety procedures used when a vehicle is in reverse but it does give drivers the ability to detect obstacles that might otherwise go unseen and the opportunity to stop the vehicle before running into a person or object.

Information on Reversing Detection Abilities

Other  Technologies

There are 3 other technologies, Infrared, Microwave & Laser, have been applied to vehicle backup warning system, but each technology has serious limitations as outlined below:

Infrared Technology

  • Can become temporarily ‘blinded’ by bright sunlight.
  • Can fail to differentiate heavy clothing from landscape during low temperature situations.
  • Average distance accuracy.

Laser Radar

  • Heavily dependent upon the light reflectivity of the object it is designed to detect.
  • Average distance accuracy.

Microwave Technology

  • Functions only when either the obstacle or vehicle is moving.  Does not detect if both vehicle and obstacles are stationary.
  • Poor distance accuracy.  The microwave system has the worse accuracy of all the backup technologies. Usually +/- 1 to 2 feet.

There are some confusion and misrepresentation on the ability of backup alert systems. Our vehicle reversing aid uses ‘echolocation’, same as the most sophisticated sonar used by marine, navy, and military applications. In each application the sonar is calibrated for the most likely and effective purpose for which it was designed to perform.

No other system can actually ‘see’ 3 dimensional objects other then echolocation sonar in its various forms, one of which is our Poron Vehicle Reversing Aid.  Our system’s miniature acoustic detector transmits a modulated beam signal. This beam signal is capable seeing through fog, rain, smoke and snow, most types of weather day and night. When the signal strikes a stationary or moving target "directly", it bounces back to the receiver and instantaneously sends the signal to the microprocessor.

The 8-bit microprocessor programmed with our exclusive "intelligent control software" processes the feedback signals automatically and continuously calculates the “vehicle to obstacle distance”.  The computed results are transmitted to a speaker alerting the driver of the distance to obstacle.  If the microprocessor determines that a particular condition requires the driver to take precaution, special emergency sounds are generated to assist the driver to take corrective action.

The most important differences of our Vehicle Reversing Aid to other backup alert technologies are:

  • Accuracy – our system is accurate to +/- 2 inches.
  • Voice Warning – our system is the only one to “tell” you the driver the distance of obstacles behind you.
  • Object Detection – our system detects both stationary and moving objects continuously.
  • Distance Detection – our system has the largest detection range from 8 inches to 15 feet.
  • Flexibility – our system can be installed on most types of vehicles.

Other backup systems have claimed that its system can function through mud or dirt.  However if mud, being a very dense matter, were not being detected, then certainly a human being would not be seen at all! We have been manufacturing backup alert system since 1986 and we found our ultrasonic system to be the most capable system in meeting the needs of drivers worldwide.

The problem of blind spots

The area behind your vehicle can be a killing zone.

Every year, children are injured and killed because drivers (in some cases, parents) don't see them while backing up. According to Kids and Cars (www.kidsandcars.org), a nonprofit group that wants to improve child safety around cars, backover incidents killed at least 58 children in 2002.

A contributing factor is that larger vehicles (SUVs, pickups, and minivans), which have become increasingly popular, have larger blind spots than passenger cars. A blind spot is the area behind a vehicle that a person can't see from the driver's seat.

To help consumers understand how large some blind spots are, Published Reports has measured the blind spots of a number of popular models. The results for both an average-height driver (5 feet 8 inches) and a shorter driver (5 feet 1 inch) are listed in the chart to the right.

To measure the blind spots, a 28-inch traffic cone was positioned behind the vehicle at the point where the driver could just see its top. As the illustration shows, longer and taller vehicles tend to have significantly larger blind spots. (The shading shows the length of each blind spot; lighter for an average-height driver, darker for a shorter driver.)

Bottom line: Your best defense against backover accidents is to get out of your vehicle and check behind it just before you back up. If kids are nearby, make sure you can see them while backing up.

MOTOR VEHICLE STATISTICS SUPPORT NEED FOR BACKING SAFETY

  • There are more than 500 million registered vehicles worldwide with approximately 250 million in North America.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported collision avoidance systems can potentially reduce motor vehicle crashes by approximately 70%.
  • An estimated 20% of accidents are backing related.
  • Failure, by the driver, to see a vehicle, object or person is the number one cause of backing accidents.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports an estimated 390 people die each year from being backed over.
  • Children aged 1-4 are most at risk

The bottom line: Driver error is the predominant cause of accidents. One way of reducing driver error is to help drivers avoid crashes. New technologies, like the Back-Up Pal Vehicle Reversing Aid are available and affordable to help drivers operate more safely and efficiently and potentially reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and economic costs resulting from motor vehicle crashes.
